We’ve heard the term quit quitting for a while now, but what exactly does it mean? And why are so many people quietly quitting in the workplace? How can this affect your future, career, and reputation? Here are some things you should consider about quitting quiet and what you should do instead.
What is Quiet Quitting?
Quiet quitting is defined as employees providing only the bare minimum performance effort to comply with their job requirements. It became a popular buzzword after the pandemic when The Great Resignation was moving significant populations of professionals around to different opportunities. Those unable to make appropriate changes in their jobs to reflect their salary and work/life balance requirements began quitting quietly by no longer going the extra mile for their employers.
The Negative Effects of Quiet Quitting
While many people choose to engage in quiet quitting, that doesn’t mean it’s a good practice for professionals. There are many adverse effects when deciding only to do the bare minimum in your job. But those who choose to quit quietly will be overlooked for promotions, raises, and responsibilities as they are seen as someone who is not interested in doing or learning more on the job.
How to Make Impactful Changes
There are other ways to avoid burnout in your career and improve your employment circumstances before you decide to quietly quit. The first step and one many employees avoid, is simply communicating with your boss. Let them know you’re feeling burnt out and what you want to see moving forward. Don’t just use this as an opportunity to complain; come to the table with solutions. You should also take advantage of your PTO and use that time to recharge. Outside of work, plan time for the things you enjoy.
